close to the castle, we went to see what we'd missed."

"After enjoying the church interior, we climbed the 160 steps, worn stone,

very narrow spiral, to the top of the tower for a spectacular view."

"I'd previously taken pictures of the church from the castle. "

"Now I photographed the castle from the church."

"We drove out to Debdale Wharf to see John Barnard,

boat painter, with regard to the repainting of Kantara."

"There wasn't a tiny patch of paint to be seen. Blank, bare, grey metal. Odd-looking."

Work underway

"Heading north up the canal, we spent almost four hours navigating to the winding hole

at bridge 28, having lunch shortly after winding, and returning to the marina."

"A cluster of shops and workshops selling a range of foodstuffs,

art and craft work, gifts and assorted ephemera."

A Sunday afternoon walk

"Just along the towing-path as far as bridge 22, then back along the road." 

"It was beautiful."

Down the roadway into the marina...

"Our last day before we left Kantara was beautiful."

"Absolutely wonderful. There wasn't a cloud in the sky most of the time."

"Grace and I drove to Devizes in Wiltshire, to stay in a house there for the week."

with salads and sauces, plus an amazing chocolate cake, and a huge Eton Mess."

"Flowers decorated the dining room, wonderful smells filled the air, and wine flowed."

"It was a brilliant day, and a superb way to spend this anniversary of ours."

Around Devizes...

"It was dismal, every scene bleak, and devoid of other people,

and the locks at Caen Hill were forbidding, hostile."

"We were looking forward to navigating them one day.

In much better weather, though, and with other people about."

"A National Trust property in a tiny village of ancient buildings. Very quaint,

very beautiful, and very full of tourists for the time of year."

 "We hurried to the about-to-close Christmas Tree Exhibition in the cloisters,

where lots of trees had been decorated by local schools, businesses,

charities and other neighbouring organisations."

"The startlingly olde-worlde nearby village of Lacock, too,

needed time and warm sunshine for proper exploration."

"Salisbury Cathedral was no disappointment. Immense. Awe-inspiring. Beautiful."
